About AI proposals

Where the AI's proposed defects come from, what the AI decides and what it never decides, and how a proposal becomes part of a signed report.

In short: the AI proposes where a defect is and what kind it is. A person decides whether it is real, how serious it is, and whether it goes into a report.

An automatic detector examined the capture photographs and outlined what it took to be defects — cracks, spalling, seepage, vegetation and so on. Each outline was traced from the photograph onto the model. The proposals were then loaded into the project, each with a number like any other finding.

Each proposal keeps a record of where it came from: which detector proposed it and which version, how sure the detector was, the photograph the outline was traced on, how much detail that photograph had, and how many photographs agree on the place. These details are in the CSV export. See CSV columns.

What the AI decides, and what it never does

Section titled “What the AI decides, and what it never does”
The AI proposes A person decides
That there may be a defect here Whether it is real: Sign off or Dismiss
What type it is — the category Whether the type is right: Edit
Its outline Whether the outline is right: Edit shape or Replace geometry
— Severity, always. The AI never sets one

“How sure the detector was” is not a confidence in the size of the defect. It says the machine thought there was a crack here, not how well its outline is known.

  1. A proposal that nobody has decided is listed in the AI defects panel and drawn on the model when the panel is open. It is not in the Observations list, and it is not in any report.
  2. An engineer reviews it: signs it off with a severity, dismisses it with a reason, or skips it.
  3. A signed-off proposal becomes an ordinary finding in the Observations list and is printed in reports, with the engineer’s name. A dismissed one is kept, with its reason, and is counted on the first page of a report.

Near the edge of the structure, a corner of a traced outline can slip past the near surface and land on a surface behind it. The defect’s place and type are still right, but its area and perimeter describe a shape nobody drew. AerTwin marks such outlines outline on the card and warns in the review panel. Correct the outline before you sign it off. See Correct the outline of a proposal.
