Task

Measure an area

Measure the surface area inside an outline that you draw on the structure.

FindMeasureArea

The area is the real surface inside the outline, following the slope of the face — a tilted face has more surface than the ground it covers.

  1. On the toolbar, click Measure ▸ Area.

  2. Click the corners of the area on the model, in order around its edge.

To remove the last point, press Backspace.

  3. To close the outline, do one of the following:

    • Click the first point.
    • Press Enter.
    • Double-click.

The outline closes and is filled on the model. The Measurement panel shows the figures.

  4. Correct the outline if you need to: drag a point to move it, click the outline to add a point, and double-click a point to remove it.

The figures follow the outline as you change it.

  5. Read the figures:

    Figure Meaning
Area The surface area inside the outline, following the slope
Perimeter The distance round the outline
Area (plan), Perimeter (plan) The same, seen from directly above. Not shown for an outline on a near-vertical face
Elevation (Min), Elevation (Max), Elevation (Diff) The heights of the lowest and highest points, and the difference
Slope (Min), Slope (Max) The flattest and the steepest part inside the outline

To keep the measurement, see Save a measurement. To record it as a finding with a severity and notes, see Record a finding from a measurement.
