Task

Cut the model with a section plane

Cut away part of the model along a plane so that you can look at, and measure, what is behind the surface.

FindAdvancedSection

A section plane hides the part of the model between the plane and the camera. It changes only what is drawn: nothing is deleted, and the model is whole again when you clear the section.

  1. On the toolbar, click Advanced ▸ Section.

  2. Click a point on a flat face of the structure.

  3. Click a second point on the same flat face.

The model is cut along the plane through the two points, square to the face. The words Section plane on appear at the top of the view.

  4. Orbit to look into the cut.

You can measure inside the cut with any tool.

  • Drag either of the two points to move the plane. The same half stays hidden.
  • In the Measurement panel, click Flip which half is hidden to show the other half.
  • Click Clear beside Section plane on at the top of the view.

Or, in the Measurement panel, click Clear the section.

A finding saved while a cut is on records the cut with its view. In the finding form, the box Record the section plane this was measured through is selected by default; anyone who opens the finding then sees the same cut. Clear the box to save the view without the cut.

When you fly to a finding that was saved through a cut, the cut is applied again, and the sign at the top of the view names the finding — for example, “Section plane — from OBS-012”. Click Clear to remove the cut.
